Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic park is within easy access of the Kailua Kona area of the Big Island. Located to the south of the Kailua-Kona airport, Kaloko-Honokohau offers you a glimpse into the way of life that the native Hawaiians enjoyed for hundreds of years. This park consists of two ahupua' a (traditional Hawaiian land divisions), Kaloko and Honokohau that run from the slopes of the volcano above to the shore. There are a couple of sights here that are worthy of a stop on your way to the Kohala or Kailua-Kona. This park is home to two fishponds, one fish trap, a heiau, anchialine ponds, ahu (rock cairns), a holua (rock slide), a great, quiet beach and miles of hiking trails. Another thing that you will find in abundance here is sunshine, so come prepared! There are a couple of things that you must know before planning a visit to, or stopping by this park. |
With that said you will not only see all of the above historical sights but some great wildlife and plants that are native to these pacific islands. Near the fishponds keep your eyes out for the ‘alae ke’oke’o (Hawaiian coot), the ae’o (Hawaiian black-necked stilt), the pua pilo (a fragrant white flower), ‘ilima (a yellow flower used in traditional medicine) and the pohuehue (beach morning glory) which can be seen along the sands of the |
